Remediation Plan for Saxon 87 Students
If your student is struggling or test scores, after adjusted for partial credit (see Tests), drop below 80%, follow the remediation steps below. If you have any questions, or need further assistance, please contact us. We can help!
Important Note: Saxon 8/7 does an excellent job of preparing students for Algebra 1. I want to encourage you to give your student extra time to really learn and develop fluency in these skills. I can assure you it will be worth it. Learning algebra will be so much easier for your student.
- Is the student watching the DIVE video lectures for every lesson?
The DIVE video lectures include instruction not found in the Saxon textbook that is essential to learning the new concept. It is imperative that your student watch these lectures every day, even if they think they already know it. Repeat the last five to ten lessons, using the DIVE lectures and following all the steps on the Student Instruction Sheet on the DIVE Teacher Guide
- Evaluate correct course placement. Saxon 8/7 is for students in 7th grade or higher, who have memorized all multiplication facts to 9. If your student is in 6th Grade or lower and has memorized all multiplication facts, take the placement test. If your student is in 8th grade or higher and has not had pre-algebra, Saxon 8/7 is the correct course.
- Has the student memorized (3 seconds or less- no skip counting, using fingers or tricks, etc) their multiplication facts to 9?
Yes: Go to next question.
No: Click Here
- Has the student completed all assigned Facts Practice drills (to this point) accurately in 5-7 minutes?
Yes: Go to next question.
No: Stop the Saxon lessons (no more than 1 week) and work on all the drills that have not been mastered. They should be repeated until completed accurately in 5-7 minutes.
- Print the Student Instructions sheet on page 6 of the Teacher Guide.
- Repeat the Mixed Practice problems for the last 10 lessons. This will fill in gaps and develop fluency in these skills before building on them in the new lessons. Make sure your student follows the steps on the Student Instructions on page 6.
- For the next 10 lessons, do all 30 of the Mixed Practice problems. Then, if the student scores an 80 or higher on the next test (adjusted for extra credit), try the Odds or Evens + 5 Method in the Mixed Practice section on the Teacher Guide. If the test score is less than 80, continue doing all 30 Mixed Practice problems.
If, after completing the steps above, the student continues to struggle, please contact us.
