Dr. Shormann does not think a consumer math course is necessary. Shormann Math courses teach the foundational principles of consumer math like how to calculate sales tax, interest, debts, loans, and more. However, it does not specifically teach how to balance a check book or fill out a tax return.
He does not recommend taking a consumer math course in place of a Shormann Math course. Students should continue as far as they can go with Shormann Math courses, then if needed, take a consumer math course.
Students should not take a break between Shormann Math courses to do consumer math as this will cause them to lose fluency, which makes learning the next course much harder.
However, students can take consumer math along with their Shormann Math course or take a consumer math course after they complete their Shormann math courses.
