Dr. Shormann teaches the full Saxon lesson—the one John Saxon trained his teachers to teach. Other Saxon videos only teach the lesson in the textbook, which is simply a summary that does not include the essential instruction that connects the incremental lessons. For example, when lesson 40 builds on a concept from lesson 20, Dr. Shormann reviews that concept, teaching how the new concepts is just adding one new step to what they already know. This creates bite-sized lessons that are easy to understand with less practice. Without these connections, the lessons seem disconnected and confusing, making it harder to learn.
Why are the example problems different than the one in the Saxon textbook?
John Saxon trained teachers to teach the Saxon lesson using different example problems than the ones in the textbook. This allows the student to use the example problems in the book for additional practice, when needed.
Does using different example problems confuse the student?
No. During the lecture, the student should not be looking at their textbook. Instead, they should be taking notes and working the example problems along with Dr. Shormann. Therefore, using different example problems is not confusing at all.
Are there video solutions for every problem?
John Saxon advised re-teaching the corresponding lesson instead of giving students solutions. DIVE makes this easy: when a student is stuck, simply click the DIVE lecture number in parentheses next to the problem to quickly re-learn the concept and apply it on their own. This builds retention and fluency better than simply looking at a solution. If additional help is needed, the Saxon Solutions Manual, included in the homeschool kit, provides step-by-step solutions, and Dr. Shormann offers Q&A email support. DIVE vs Saxon Teacher
