IT DEPENDS OF WHETHER THE STUDENT IS A GOOD/STRONG MATH STUDENT OR A STRUGGLING OR RELUCTANT MATH STUDENT.
Struggling or Reluctant Math Students
We recommend using Shormann Pre-Algebra which provides excellent preparation for Algebra 1 by developing fluency (speed and accuracy) in the essential skills that make learning math faster and easier. While it may seem redundant to retake pre-algebra, many of the concepts will be new. Even if they are not new to the student, because TT does not have much review, most students have not achieved fluency in those concepts which makes it difficult to build on in Algebra 1.
However, if you think your student is ready for Algebra 1, you can try one of the following options:
- Option 1: Complete the Algebra 1 Prep Drills, then take the Placement Test for Shormann Algebra 1.
- Option 2: If the student used Saxon 8/7 Third Edition, try this Remediation Plan
Good Math Students
Because TT Pre-Algebra is fairly weak, there are some gaps between Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra and Shormann Algebra 1. However, a good math student, who has memorized multiplication/division tables to 9 and completed TT Pre-Algebra with an 85 or higher, can fill these gaps by completing the Fraction/Decimal/Percent Drills included in the Shormann Algebra 1 course. Also, the first 25 lessons of Shormann Algebra 1 include review of the missing pre-algebra concepts, ensuring the student builds a firm foundation for the remainder of the course. Keep in mind, the student may need additional days to complete some of these lessons. To be sure your student is ready, take the Placement Test for Shormann Algebra 1.
