After submitting each practice set, does your student follow the steps on Relearn Missed Problems? If not, this causes gaps that make math harder and longer. Parents often think the student needs more practice. Instead, they should quickly fill the gaps by following these steps: How to Fill Gaps
Dr. Shormann strongly encourages you to not do extra practice problems or try to achieve immediate mastery. 30+ years of research shows incremental development and continual review (Shormann's methodology) is much more efficient and builds LONG-TERM retention and fluency which makes math faster and easier AND raises standardized test scores.
Doing extra practice problems on one topic is detrimental to developing and maintaining fluency in the other concepts they are learning. They need to practice all the concepts over a long period of time. TruePractice™ — The Proven Way to Master Math
Please trust our process! It is CRITICAL they use the Timed Method and follow all the steps on the Practice Set Instructions, especially if they are stuck on a question (page 1) or get a question wrong (page 2).
If the student misses a problem, it is that, after submitting the assignment, when the Results page is displayed with her grade, they should click the "Video Solutions" link, watch the video solution for each missed problem and solve it correctly on paper. Then go on to the next lesson. They will have many more opportunities to practice this concept in future assignments. Please do not look for extra practice problems on the missed problems. There are detailed instructions on Relearn Missed Problems.
If your student has low scores and/or they are taking too long to complete a lesson, this is usually caused by not doing these two CRITICAL steps:
- Not using the Timed Method
- Not watching the video solutions for each missed problem and solving them correctly on paper (see image below). If not, please see: Remediation Plan for Struggling Students - Low Grades in Shormann Math
- Not contacting Dr. Shormann and his team when they don't understand the video solution.
