Even if they pass a placement test, Dr. Shormann strongly advises against skipping Pre-algebra. We have never had a student skip Pre-Algebra and do well in Algebra 1. They end up struggling and often have to stop and go back to Pre-Algebra.
Instead of skipping, he recommends using The Timed Method, but during the first 20-25 lessons, allow your student to work 15-30 minutes longer than the time listed on the chart. This will allow them to progress more quickly through the course, while ensuring they do not develop gaps which make learning harder and slower.
Shormann Pre-Algebra is a a Pre-AP, honors level course, but it starts out very easy to build fluency in basic fundamentals and give students a chance to learn how to use the eLearning system. It starts getting much more challenging by the third or fourth week. Can I skip Pre-Algebra?
Regardless of how strong or gifted your student is in math, Dr. Shormann strongly discourages skipping Pre-Algebra*. This course lays a critical foundation for success in all upper level math courses. That would be like skipping Algebra 1.
However, if you really think your student is ready for Algebra 1, give this placement test: Placement Test for Skipping Pre-Algebra
